Crash

Hello people! It's been a while since we had anything to show. I can't speak for Jim, but personally I confess to having been very very lazy. Anyway, we finally have a new post. The brief for this one is 'a 3 panel comic page with the theme of crash’. Mine is based on a few lines from Burma Shave by Tom Waits. It has a great narrative and some very poetic lyrics. I really love his music at the moment, so don’t be surprised to see more Tom Waits inspired pictures from me in future. Below is his description of the song. As for the picture itself, I caved to temptation and went mad with photoshop again.

- Finn

"Burma Shave is an American shaving-cream company, like Colgate. They advertise on the side of the road and they have these limericks which are broken up into different signs like pieces of a fortune cookie. You drive for miles before you get the full message.

PLEASE DON’T

...five miles…

STICK YOUR ARM

OUT SO FAR

another five miles…

IT MIGHT GO HOME

…five more miles…

IN ANOTHER MANS CAR

- BURMA SHAVE

They reel you in. So when I was a kid I'd see these signs on the side of the road. I'm young and I think it's the name of a town. I ask my dad, "When we getting to Burma Shave?" So in the song I used Burma Shave as a dream, a mythical community, a place two people are trying to get to. They don't make it."

(Tom Waits in Time Out magazine. Date: October 1985)

Jim will post his piece up soon (we hope).

And lo, here I am!

apologies for the fail on updating, but seeing as all of my favorite blogs do the same, I feel that it's cool.

(not really.)

Here is my entry!

I'm having a bit of an octopus phase, and I wanted it to come across as an angry sea god being all angry.

Lookin' For Blood.

Hello there!
Sorry about the slight lateness of this post, hopefully Finn and I will be able to get our act together a little sooner next week, this weeks challenge was taken from the film "X-men Origins: Wolverine". A film I can honestly say I thought was pretty pants, but then that's just me.
There was however a good scene in a barn, where the line is spoken;
"
You know what happens to men who go lookin' for blood? They find it"
Graphite, watercolour, gouache and acrylic on moleskine sketchbook (yum)

Jim.

Sorry about the late posting, my bad. I had quite a few ideas for this weeks picture but in the end just went for some generic war scene. I gave it a canvas texture and some rough edges as a cheeky little homage to George Hull, an art director I respect enormously. I wish I'd spent longer refining my drawing though, and less time fiddling with it on photoshop. Here are my drafts (incase anyone cares).

Pencil and watercolour, then blitzed in photoshop.

A Wingspan Unbelievable.

Hello, this is the first post on this here collaborative blog, Finn and I both set ourselves the task of creating illustrations based on the lyric:

"So tall I take over the street, with high beams shining up my back, a wingspan unbelievable, I'm a festival, I'm a parade"

I had some difficulty getting my head around this, considering I draw very little but angels, but there you go :)

Jim.

The lyrics are obviously metaphorical, so I didn't really intend to do a completely literal translation. It just sort of happened. Nevermind, hope you like it.

Finn.
